The Supreme Court affirms that copyrights can be extended indefinitely. Anything that was published before 1922 is in the public domain. After that, the rules are a horrible mess.
Consider as an example, the historical value of all of the World War II memoirs published by individuals. These documents will probably never be digitized and preserved for historians because of the difficulty of determining their copyright status.
Why? To keep 75 year old movies from falling into the public domain.
