My mother tells me that they had a machine like this years ago. Aunt Lil' was sewing with it, and accidentally put a needle through her finger. My grandfather came to her aid and called for some whiskey to sterilize the injury. Instead of pouring it on her finger, he took a deep swig of the whiskey to steel his own nerves, then pulled the needle out.
